Arthur Villeneuve

Arthur Villeneuve (1910-1990) was a Québécois painter and member of the Order of Canada. He worked as a barber, a career which led him to prosperity until his life was abruptly altered by the death of his wife and loss of his two rental properties. He remarried a few years later and began experimenting with drawing, painting, collages and sheet metal sculptures. His most famous early work was his house in Chicoutimi, which he used as a canvas and completed covered, inside and out, with his detailed paintings. He spent nearly 100 hours per week painting the house, and it took 23 months to complete it. The house was opened as an artwork titled "Musée de l'artiste" in 1959. In his artistic career, Villeneuve is said to have painted nearly 3000 canvasses. His work is included in many public collections such as the National Gallery of Canada, and the Musée National Des Beaux-Arts du Québec.
