Overview

The term ‘Petroliana’ refers to antique gas and oil-related items including gas pumps, gas-pump globes, oil cans, signs and more. In the early days of automobile travel, services stations were scarce and often poorly lit at night, thus sparking a demand for large, bright, and often illuminated gas pump globes and signage to catch the attention of passing drivers. These extravagant pieces were gradually phased out as gas stations became more plentiful and modernized. Antique advertising paraphernalia from brands such as Texaco, Mobil, Esso, White Rose, Red Indian, Supertest and others are highly sought-after in the world of gas-and-oil collecting.
